Air India – A New Era Under the Tata Group. Air India, founded in 1932 by J.R.D. Tata, is India's national airline and has long been a symbol of the country's international presence in aviation.
Since its acquisition by the Tata Group in January 2022, the airline has undergone a major transformation aimed at becoming a globally competitive premium airline.
Fleet Modernization & Expansion
A key element of the transformation is the modernization of the fleet:
- 2024: Start of narrow-body aircraft upgrades
- 2025: Wide-body jets to be upgraded with new seats, improved cabin features, and higher service standards
Air India recently ordered 100 additional Airbus aircraft, bringing the total order to 570 planes. With over 300 aircraft, the airline serves more than 100 destinations worldwide and transports over 60 million passengers annually.

- Integration of Vistara
- Result: Air India becomes the fourth-largest business unit within the Tata Group
