From Vision to Reality: BARIG Participates in the Discourse on Potential Biometric Face Recognition at Airports

Congested airports and long passenger processing and waiting times could soon become an issue of the past. Advanced automated identity management systems present a modern vision of airports where passengers can enjoy a seamless journey by means of biometric facial recognition. In this context, the multinational technology company Vision-Box organized a Seamless Travel Lab on February 18, 2020. During this event, a diverse group of aviation experts delivered comprehensive insights into the concept of Seamless Travel.

This vision is already in practice at several airports around the world. In Germany, however, the implementation of facial recognition is proving to be relatively difficult; the industry here is rather hesitant in approaching the opportunities biometric ID-management offers.

At the panel "Secure and Seamless: The Future of Travel is Here" Michael Hoppe, Chairman and Secretary General of BARIG, along with high-ranking representatives of the aviation industry and travel technology companies, debated on the necessary framework to ensure that Germany does not drop behind as an aviation location. As the extremely dynamic discourse demonstrated, now is the time to address such solution systems more urgently. An important conclusion at this point: the airline industry, the government and official agencies have to cooperate in a more effective and future-oriented way to realize the innovative vision of Seamless Travel for customers in Germany.
